Collection care

How to clean, care for and display model aircraft

Most damage happens while a model is being moved or cleaned. Gentle dusting, safe handling and a stable cabinet protect a collection better than strong cleaning products.

In brief

  • Hold the strong fuselage, never wings, engines or antennas.
  • Use a hand blower and a clean, very soft brush.
  • Avoid direct sun, smoke, high humidity and sharp temperature changes.

Dust without damaging the finish

Start with a manual air blower or a new soft make-up brush. Work outwards from the fuselage without pushing antennas, landing gear or engines. Do not use canned air at close range.

Avoid alcohol, glass cleaner, wipes and solvents. They may damage printing, adhesives or clear plastic. Remove the model before wiping the stand with a barely damp microfibre cloth.

Safe handling and moving

Wash and dry your hands. Support the main body with both hands and clear the destination first. Never lift the model by its tail, wing, gear or stand connection.

For longer moves, use the original packaging. Photograph removable parts before packing and never force a tight fit.

Light, temperature and humidity

Direct sunlight may fade printing and heat materials unevenly. Keep cabinets away from radiators, kitchens and condensation-prone windows. A stable room is better than chasing one perfect humidity number.

A closed cabinet reduces dust and accidental contact. Low-heat LED lighting is suitable; switch it off when the display is not being viewed.

Display with space and safety

Leave visual space between wingtips and use only stable risers. Shelves must not bow, and tall cabinets should be anchored where tipping is possible. Store labelled boxes in a dry place.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean a model with a cloth?

Only on robust, accessible surfaces. A very soft brush is safer around antennas and landing gear.

Does sunlight damage model aircraft?

Long exposure can fade finishes and heat materials. Avoid direct sunlight.

How often should I clean the collection?

When dust becomes visible. A closed cabinet reduces both dust and handling frequency.
