How to start a model aircraft collection
A strong collection starts with an idea, not a large order. A theme, a scale and a physical space give every new model a reason to belong.

1. Choose the connecting story
Collect one airline, an aircraft family, aircraft you have flown, special liveries, a historical period or traffic from one airport. A clear rule makes buying decisions easier.
The rule can evolve. It only needs to be broad enough to remain enjoyable and focused enough to give the collection an identity.
- ✓Personal: memorable flights, trips or airlines.
- ✓Technical: manufacturer, type, variant or scale.
- ✓Visual: colours, commemorative liveries or cargo aircraft.
2. Set scale, space and budget
Measure the display area, including depth for wings. Set a monthly or quarterly budget and keep a reserve for an unexpected special release.
A smaller, well-spaced collection often looks better than a crowded cabinet. Compare the dimensions of your favourite aircraft in both scales before deciding.
3. Pick the first three models
A balanced start could include one aviation icon, one personally meaningful airline and one contrasting livery. Check real stock, several photographs, material, stand and return terms.
Avoid buying only because an item appears scarce. Ask whether you would still choose it if it were always available.
4. Keep a collection record
Save SKU, manufacturer, aircraft, registration, livery, scale, price and seller. A periodic overview photo reveals gaps and helps prevent duplicate purchases.
Keep boxes and small accessories. They protect the model during a move and preserve its identification.
